Suffering from breakouts under your mask? How to fight ‘maskne’

As more places are requiring face masks/coverings to be worn in public in order to fight the spread of COVID-19, individuals with sensitive skin are wondering how you fight what is under the mask – skin irritation and acne.

The reason this happens is because masks cause heat, friction and occlusion on the skin and when combined with a moist environment from breathing, talking or sweating, pores get clogged and spots appear.

How to prevent this…

  1. Wash your face first: use a gentle cleanser that doesn’t contain loads of harsh fragrances. This prevents dirt and oil being trapped on the skins surface which causes breakouts.
  2. Apply a moisturiser: not only will this keep your face hydrated, it will also act as a barrier meaning that there will be reduced friction between the skin and the mask.
  3. Ditch the makeup: wearing makeup underneath the mask causes clogged pores and breakouts even further.
  4. Wash your mask: if you are wearing a reusable mask, ensure this is washed between each use as it’s surface contains dirt and oil and can become filled with bacteria from your nose and mouth.

How you can solve this…..

Blue light therapy also helps the condition of your skin as it has anti inflammatory benefits, which decreases other symptoms of acne, such as redness. Red light therapy promotes healing and may work to decrease the visibility of acne scars. It also has anti inflammatory benefits too. Our Green light setting is also beneficial for calming the skin so calming any active acne on the face.
